Terms of Service
Last updated 7 October 2026
These terms cover your use of Landauer Gap: the website at landauer-gap.vercel.app, its API, the joules command-line tool and the GitHub Action ("the service"). Landauer Gap is run by Bharat Sharma ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the service you agree to these terms.
Your account
- You need an account to use the service. Give a real email address and keep your password, sign-in links and API keys secret.
- You are responsible for what happens under your account and your API keys. If a key leaks, revoke it under Settings → API keys straight away.
- You must be at least 16 years old.
- One person, one free account. Creating extra accounts to get around plan limits is not allowed.
Acceptable use
Do not:
- try to get into accounts, data or systems that are not yours, or test the security of the service without our written permission;
- overload the service, get around rate limits, or scrape it other than through the documented API;
- submit leaderboard measurements you know to be false, or submit simulated results as real ones;
- use the service to break any law.
We may suspend or close accounts that break these rules.
Estimates are estimates
The calculator turns your inputs into energy, cost, carbon and Landauer-gap figures using published formulas, which are shown on the Method page. Measurements from joules come from your hardware's own meters. The results are only as good as the inputs and meters, and they are not legal, tax, financial or compliance advice. If you use them in regulatory filings, such as EU AI Act technical documentation or carbon reports, you remain responsible for those filings.
Plans and billing
- The Free plan costs nothing and has the limits shown under Settings → Plan and usage.
- Pro costs US$19 a month, billed in advance by Stripe, and renews every month until you cancel.
- You can cancel any time under Settings → Plan and usage → Manage billing. Pro stays active until the end of the period you have paid for.
- Refunds follow our refund policy.
- If we change the price, we will email you at least 30 days before it applies to you.
Teams
- A team belongs to its owner, who must be on Pro to create it and invite people. Its runs, keys and alerts are the owner's data, shared with its members.
- Team API keys use the owner's plan limits. The owner can remove members and revoke team keys at any time.
- When a member leaves or is removed, the runs they sent with team keys stay with the team. When the owner closes the team, its runs move to the owner's own account; when the owner deletes their account, the team and its data are deleted.
- Only invite people who agreed to join, and only send them the link yourself.
Alerts
Alerts are a convenience, not a guarantee: a run can use much more energy without an alert, for example if it has fewer than three earlier runs to compare with. You are responsible for the webhook address you give and for who can read that channel.
Leaderboard measurements
When you share a measurement, you let us publish it on the leaderboard and through the API, combined with other people's measurements, worldwide and free of charge. Your name and email are never shown. You can remove your measurements at any time from the Leaderboard page. We may remove measurements that look wrong.
The software
The joules command-line tool is open source under the MIT licence. The rest of the service is provided to you under these terms. The physics behind it comes from the D3 research papers, which are cited on the site.
Availability and changes
We work to keep the service running but cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors. It is provided "as is". We may change or stop features. If we stop the service, we will give paying customers at least 30 days' notice and refund any unused prepaid time.
Liability
As far as the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law that cannot be limited by contract.
Ending your account
You can stop using the service at any time and delete your account under Settings → Delete account (see the privacy policy). We may end an account that breaks these terms.
Changes to these terms
We will post changes on this page and update the date below. For significant changes we will also email account holders before they apply.
